Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Details, Date of Starting of Service, Price, Procedure to use Mobile Number Portability, MNP Service Zone

What is Mobile Number Portability?
Mobile number portability (MNP) is the process of transferring (porting) your mobile phone number from one mobile phone network provider to another.

MNP (Mobile Number Portability) is related to the routing of calls or mobile messages (SMS, MMS) to a number once it has been ported. There are various flavours of call routing implementation across the globe but the international and European best practice is via the use of a central database (CDB) of ported numbers. Network operator makes copies of CDB and queries it to find out which network to send a call to. This is also known as All Call Query (ACQ) and is highly efficient and scalable. Majority of the established and upcoming MNP systems across the world are based on this ACQ/CDB method of call routing.

The porting process would involve a break in service when a number is detached from the donor and added to the recipient, which should not take more than two hours during which no mobile service will be available. After this, the recipient operator has to carry out subscriber verification according to guidelines for acquiring a new user, within five days of receiving a written request. Once verified, the request is forwarded to the donor, seeking its clearance. The donor then has to verify and get back to the recipient with details within two days. MNP is then implemented.

Country:-India
Date of Starting of Service:-20th January 2011
Time to port days:-7
Price:-Rs.19 (non-refundable)

Please Note:-
Users can switch if and only if a minimum period of 90 days has elapsed after subscription to the mobile service of the current service provider.

Procedure to use Mobile Number Portability:-
1.) Send the following SMS to 1900 – PORT – eg. PORT 9123456789

2. You will get an SMS with your unique porting code. This is a unique number that will be maintained along with your mobile number with a third party called MNP Service Provider (Selected companies for this service in India- Syniverse Technologies and Telcordia). The unique code has a expiry time. You need to apply to the new preferred operator with that code within the stipulated time.

3. The new operator will communicate with existing operator and ask for permission. If approved the new operator will set a time for porting and communicate this to MNP provider and existing operator.

4. On the set date and time, the current operator will disconnect the number and pass the message to MNP provider.

5. The new operator will now claim that number and MNP would maintain a central database with the new details.

MNP is a right initiative taken by TRAI.It will encourage all telecoms operators to provide services at an optimal level, and on the long run, it’s a WIN-WIN situation for the subscribers, the Network Operators and the Regulator.
