Benefits of Turmeric (haldi)
The turmeric family is Zingiberaceae, the ginger family. Its turmeric in other languages is
Haridra (Sanskrit), Haldi, halada (Hindi, Bengali, Gujurati, Marathi), Pasapu (Telugu), Manjal (Tamil) and Arishina (Kannada).
Turmeric or haldi is a popular spice used all over the world as a seasoning product. It gives a distinct flavor, taste and yellow color when added to curries.
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.
Home remedies using turmeric(Haldi):
Post partum recovery
The same juice is good for new mothers soon after delivery. It improves the overall health and promotes breast milk secretion.
Anemia
Turmeric is a rich source of iron. Take a teaspoon of raw turmeric juice with a bit of honey. It is helpful for those suffering from anemia
Throat pain and cough
Take a glass of warm milk. Add little turmeric, black pepper powder, sugar and ghee and drink it. This gives relief from throat pain and cough
Common colds
Sprinkle turmeric powder over burnt charcoal and inhale the fumes. This is highly beneficial in asthma and common colds.
For sinus problems
Fry turmeric, jaggery and ghee in equal proportion. Store this in a bottle. Take a pinch of it everyday if you have sinus problem
For diabetes
Diabetes patients should take half a tsp each of turmeric along with amla (gooseberry) powder daily early in the morning
Skin Benefits
For removing facial hair
Apply a gram flour (besan) and turmeric or haldi paste on face and neck. After sometime when it dries, scrub it.
Make a face mask, by mixing a paste of this powder and sandalwood powder with a little edible oil. Apply this on your face for 15/20 minutes. Wash with cold water. Your face will be bright and radiant within a month.
Cuts and burns
Turmeric or haldi is an antiseptic. It should be immediately applied on cuts, bleeding or burns. It stops bleeding and heals the cut or burn
For itching
Mix a spoon of turmeric with butter or coconut oil and massage on your skin
How to Store Turmeric
- Buy turmeric root or finely ground powder, look for rich yellow color.
- Turmeric spice should be stored in an airtight container in a cool dark place. Turmeric spice lose its potency due to heat, light, and air.
- As a general rule follow the following guideline for storing the spices: Whole Turmeric corns: 5 years
- Ground turmeric spice: 6 months
- Never store turmeric spices in refrigerator, humidity will destroy it.
